Inflatables

The Best Halloween Pumpkin Decorations

The pumpkin is the one Halloween motif that nobody objects to, which makes it the safest way to decorate a front yard at scale.

The short answer

The LightShow Airblown Inflatable Pumpkin Reaper at 8.5 ft is the best pumpkin decoration for most front yards: it gives you a lit centerpiece at a scale no carved pumpkin can reach, it holds its shape for the whole season, and the internal light show means it still works at nine at night. For a path rather than a lawn, lit pumpkin stakes do more per dollar than anything else in the category.

Real pumpkins have one advantage and three problems. The advantage is that they are the genuine article. The problems are that a carved pumpkin collapses in about five days in warm weather, squirrels will find it before your neighbors do, and the candle inside is invisible from the sidewalk. If you want pumpkins on display for the whole of October rather than for the last weekend, you are buying props — and the question becomes which format, at what scale, and lit how.

Scores are our own editorial rubric for best halloween pumpkin decorations. They are not customer ratings, and we do not publish star ratings or review counts for products.

How we picked

Pumpkin props cover an unusually wide range of formats, so each was scored against the job it is actually doing in a yard:

  • Scale — whether it is a focal point or a repeated element. These are different purchases and most people buy one when they needed the other.
  • Built-in light — an unlit orange prop is a gray prop after dark. Internal illumination is the single biggest differentiator here.
  • Season tolerance — six weeks outdoors in rain and wind, not one night.
  • Placement — lawn, roof, path or porch. The roof is the one most yards never use.

No prices are scored, and nothing here was bought on our behalf. Our sourcing and scoring method is on the editorial policy page.

Good

  • Colour cycling gives the scene movement without a motor

One big pumpkin or twenty small ones

This is the actual decision, and it is worth making deliberately rather than drifting into. A single large lit pumpkin is a focal point: it draws the eye, it anchors the yard, and everything else you own arranges itself around it. A run of small lit pumpkins is an edge treatment: it describes the shape of the property, it guides people up the path, and it makes the whole frontage read as decorated rather than one corner of it.

Most yards need both and buy two of one. If you already own a big centerpiece of any kind — a giant skeleton, an inflatable, an animatronic — buy the small repeated pumpkins, because the focal point is taken. If the yard is bare, buy the focal point first.

Matching the pumpkin format to the space

The roof is free square footage

Roof-mounted pumpkins are the format almost nobody uses, and they are seen from further away than anything on a lawn because nothing blocks them. A parked car hides a four-foot prop in a front garden completely. It hides nothing on a roof.

The caution is honest: this means working at height, and a wet October roof is not a good place to improvise. Mount in daylight in dry weather, tie back to multiple points rather than one, and plan the take-down before you do the put-up. The best Halloween roof inflatables covers the props built for it and the rigging they need.

Orange goes dark first

Orange is a mid-tone, which means it loses contrast faster than white or black as the light goes. A row of unlit orange props that looked excellent at five in the afternoon is a row of gray lumps by seven, and seven is when people are actually walking past.

Prefer props with internal lighting wherever the format allows it — inflatables, lit stakes, string lights. Where a prop is unlit, light it warm rather than white: a warm spot makes orange glow, and a cool white spot makes it look washed out and plastic. The Halloween lighting color guide has the pairings, and the best Halloween spotlights covers the fixtures.

Solar pumpkin lights, and the October problem

Solar pumpkin stakes are the easiest thing in this category to install, because there is no cord, no outlet and no timer — you push them into the ground and walk away. They are also the thing most likely to disappoint in late October, because the days are short and the panel is horizontal, collecting at the worst time of year.

Used correctly they are excellent: path edging in a spot with genuine open sky, where four hours of visible light is plenty because trick-or-treating is over by nine. Used under a tree or on a north-facing path, they are decorative in daylight only. Solar vs plug-in Halloween decorations works through the trade in full, and the best solar Halloween decorations covers which ones hold up.

Storing them so you own them next year

Pumpkin props are mostly hollow plastic or coated fabric, and both fail in storage rather than in use. Hollow plastic cracks when something heavy is stacked on it; coated fabric mildews when it is packed damp. Dry everything for a day under cover before it goes in a tote, keep rigid pumpkins at the top of the stack rather than the bottom, and put a desiccant canister in with anything fabric.

How to store Halloween decorations covers the whole routine, and the best Halloween storage bins covers what to put them in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best outdoor pumpkin decoration?

A large lit inflatable pumpkin, for most front yards, because it gives you scale and its own light in one purchase and holds its shape all season. If the yard already has a centerpiece, lit pumpkin pathway stakes are the better addition.

How long do real carved pumpkins last outside?

Usually three to seven days once carved, and less in warm weather or where animals can reach them. If you want pumpkins on display for the whole of October rather than the last weekend, props are the only way to do it.

Do solar pumpkin lights work in October?

In an open, south-facing spot, yes — four hours of run time covers the hours that matter. Under a tree, beside a fence or on a north-facing path they will not charge enough to be useful, because October has short days and low sun.

Can you put inflatable pumpkins on a roof?

Yes, and roof-mounted props are seen from much further away than anything on a lawn. Mount in dry daylight, tie back to several points rather than one, and plan how you are getting it down before you put it up.

How do you store pumpkin decorations?

Dry them fully under cover for a day first, then pack rigid pumpkins at the top of a tote stack rather than the bottom, since hollow plastic cracks under weight. Add a desiccant canister to anything fabric to stop mildew over the winter.
