Giants got interactive

The Home Depot 12 FT Skelly returned with a meaningful revision rather than a color change: app-enabled control, servo motors driving head and mouth movement, the ability to record up to thirty sounds, Bluetooth speak-through so you can talk through the figure in real time, and twenty LCD LifeEyes effects. The original is still sold alongside it at its original price for people who just want the silhouette.

Whether the interactivity is worth it depends entirely on whether somebody will stand outside working it. As a static giant, the original does the same job. The 12-foot skeleton roundup compares them properly.

The height race continued

Lowe's 2026 collection leads with a 15-foot Talking Lighted Skeleton Watcher — three feet above the Home Depot giant, which is the entire pitch and a reasonable one if your street already has Skellys on it. Lowe's also moved its Gemmy Airblown Halloween line to exclusive, which matters if you were buying that range elsewhere.

Animatronics leaned psychological

The pattern across this season's flagship figures is unsettling rather than gory: scale contrast, domestic scenes gone wrong, child-height figures. That is a genuine shift and a welcome one for a street with young trick-or-treaters on it.

What did not change

• Weather ratings. Still light moisture across the category, still not tracking price. See are animatronics waterproof.
• Inflatable fan quality. Still the strongest predictor of survival, still the specification listings describe least clearly.
• Fog machines. Genuinely mature. The machines worth buying this year are the machines that were worth buying five years ago.
• Storage. Still the thing nobody sells you and everybody needs.

Buying on Amazon this season

The headline giants are retailer exclusives and none of them are on Amazon. That matters because they sell out — by late September the popular configurations are gone until next summer, and there is no restock.

What Amazon is genuinely better for: lighting, fog machines and fluid, power and timers, anchoring hardware, storage, and third-party giants once the exclusives have sold through. That is most of a display by count, and all of the parts that decide whether the display works.

What we would actually buy this year

1. If you have no giant: the original 12-footer, bought in August. It is the piece that changes a house.
2. If you already have one: skip the app revision and spend the money on lighting instead. It will do more for your display.
3. If your street is full of Skellys: the 15-footer, and budget properly for anchoring and storage.
4. If your constraint is wind or space: the wide ground-breaker. Most of the impact, none of the problems.
5. Whatever else you buy: a pair of RGB spots. Lighting remains the highest-impact spend in the category and almost nobody starts there.
