Editorial policy
What our recommendations are based on, what they are not based on, and how to hold us to it.
Most buying advice in this category is unsourced. We checked twelve sites ranking for Halloween decoration terms and found exactly one that documents any selection method at all — and it has not rerun its testing since 2023. This page exists so you can judge ours.
1. How products are selected
Every pick on this site is chosen from four kinds of evidence:
- Manufacturer specifications. Dimensions, wattage, materials, IP ratings, stated weather tolerance, activation modes.
- Retailer listings. What is actually sold, in what configuration, and what is currently available.
- Published third-party testing. Cited by name and date, credited to whoever did it. Never absorbed as ours.
- Documented owner reports. Retailer review threads, haunt community forums and long-running discussion threads, which contain genuine ownership experience about failure modes.
Each category has its own criteria, published on the page. For inflatables it is fan type, shape geometry and anchoring. For animatronics it is street presence, build, weather tolerance, setup and storage footprint. For fog machines it is density, whether the fog stays low, run time, setup and consumable cost. You can disagree with the weighting because you can see it.
2. What we do not do
Stated plainly, in the first person:
- We do not receive free products. Nothing on this site was supplied by a manufacturer or a retailer.
- We do not run a test lab. There is no wind tunnel, no spray rig and no set of owned units behind these pages.
- We do not claim to have physically tested products we have not. You will not find “in our testing” anywhere on this site, because it would not be true.
- We do not sell placements. No paid inclusion, no sponsored picks, no advertiser influence over rankings.
- We do not publish ratings we do not have. No star ratings for products, no review counts, no testimonials.
3. Our scores are editorial, and they are labeled as such
The numbers on our picks are our own assessment against the published criteria for that category. They are not customer ratings and they are not derived from testing. They appear as visible page content and are deliberately kept out of the page’s structured data, because marking an editorial opinion up as a product review rating would contradict everything above.
4. How third-party testing is treated
Where somebody has genuinely tested something, we cite them by name and date and link to the work. The most substantial physical testing in this category — inflation timing, wind and water spray on Halloween inflatables — was published by Reviewed in October 2023, and we reference it as theirs, with the date shown, because a three-season-old test is still the best evidence available and you should know how old it is.
5. How prices are handled
Prices render only from a live data layer with a date attached. When no live price is available, the page says “check price” rather than showing a number that may be months out of date.
At launch this site has no live price feed, so every buy button reads “check price”. That is a deliberate choice: a stale number that sends you to a listing expecting something different is worse than no number. We also do not publish predicted discounts or deal alerts, for the same reason.
6. How content is updated
Halloween content goes stale in a very specific way — half the pages ranking in this category are a season or more out of date, some with the wrong year still in the headline. Our cadence:
- June to July: research current-season models across every category.
- July: every roundup refreshed, and every outbound product link verified to still resolve to something actually sold. A buy link to a discontinued product is the worst trust failure an affiliate site can have.
- August: everything live and submitted for indexing before demand ramps.
- September to October: monitor and fix only.
- January: full audit — dead links retired, discontinued products removed.
Date honesty: a “last updated” date reflects a real content change. We do not bump dates on rebuilds, and our sitemap reports each page’s own content date rather than the build timestamp.
7. How to report an error
Email mike@blackironathletics.com or use the contact form. If you are right, we will correct the page and re-date it. If a correction changes a recommendation, we will say so on the page rather than quietly swapping it.
8. Affiliate relationships
Haunt & Hedge earns commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this site, at no extra cost to you. Commission rates do not decide rankings: where the better buy for the reader is at a retailer we earn nothing from — which is true of several of the giants covered here — we link it anyway and label it as a non-earning link on the page.
Every page carrying an affiliate link declares it above the first link, not only in the footer. The full statement is on the affiliate disclosure page.
