The Best Halloween Window Decorations

A window is the only part of a house that decorates two rooms at once — the yard it faces and the room behind it.

The short answer

Ghostly Apparitions with a holographic window screen is the best Halloween window decoration for a house that faces a street: a projected figure moving behind glass is the only window effect that reads from the sidewalk, and the screen is what turns a sheet of glass into something that will hold an image. For a window with no power behind it, a 12 in ghost-face window creeper does more per dollar than anything else here.

Windows are badly used in most Halloween displays, and the reason is that people decorate them from inside — clings on the glass, a lamp with an orange bulb, a string of lights draped over the curtain rail. From the lawn, almost none of that is visible after dark, because the room behind is darker than the street in front and the glass turns into a mirror. Getting a window to work from outside is a different problem with a short list of real solutions.

Scores are our own editorial rubric for best halloween window decorations. They are not customer ratings, and we do not publish star ratings or review counts for products.

How we picked

Window decorations are the one category where the same product can be excellent and useless depending on which side of the glass it goes, so these were the four things scored:

  • Reading distance from the street — the only measure that matters for a front-facing window.
  • Whether it needs a light source behind it — and whether the product supplies one.
  • Residue and damage — a window is glass in a frame you probably rent or want to keep clean.
  • Which side it belongs on — inside, outside, or on the glass itself. Getting this wrong wastes the purchase.

No prices are scored, and nothing here was bought on our behalf. Our sourcing and scoring method is on the editorial policy page.

Ghostly Apparitions with Holographic Window Screen

Fun World

Sits inside a lit window and throws a hard silhouette. Weather never touches it, and an upstairs window puts the effect at a height no yard prop can reach.

Height
About 12 in
Placement
Inside a window, behind a blind or sheer curtain

Static cut silhouette, no motor
Needs
A window with a light source behind it

Good

  • Completely weatherproof, because it never goes outside
  • An upstairs window gives height for nothing
  • Nothing to anchor, stake or cover

  • Blocks the use of that window for the season
  • No movement at all — the whole effect is the shape

Lit pumpkin, ghost and bat window panels, 3 per set
Mounting
Suction cups plus self-adhesive hooks

Battery, with a built-in timer
Modes
8 flashing modes (listed)

Good

  • Faces outward, so the display works even if nobody comes to the door
  • Suction cups leave nothing on the glass and nothing on the frame
  • The timer means it lights itself at dusk without you being home

Less good

  • Suction cups let go in a cold snap; the adhesive hooks are the backup for a reason
  • Battery life is the limit on how long you can run it each night
  • Panels are modest in size — good on a standard window, lost on a patio door

Double-Sided Halloween Window Clings, 6 Sheets product photo
#4Decorating glass with zero residue

Double-Sided Halloween Window Clings, 6 Sheets

Various

Static cling, not adhesive. That is the whole point: it goes on glass, comes off in one piece, and leaves nothing behind for a facilities manager or a landlord to find.

Type
Static-cling vinyl sheets, bats, ghosts and skeletons
Surface
Glass and other smooth non-porous surfaces
Reusable
Yes, if stored flat on the backing sheet
Power
None

Good

  • Sticks by static, so there is no adhesive to fail, mark or peel paint
  • Cut it up — one multi-sheet set covers several panes or a whole partition
  • Reads from both sides of the glass, which is the trick nobody uses

Less good

  • Cling only holds on genuinely smooth glass; textured or frosted panes shed it
  • Curls permanently if it gets stored screwed up in a drawer
  • Small motifs disappear from more than a few feet away

  • Visual impact6.8

The mirror problem, and the one way around it

After dark, a window with an unlit room behind it reflects the street. Anything you stick on the inside of that glass is invisible from outside, because it is competing with a reflection of a streetlight. This is why so many window displays look superb from the living room and like nothing at all from the sidewalk.

The fix is always the same: put light behind the decoration, inside the room, aimed at the glass. That is literally what a projection kit does — the projector sits inside, throws onto a screen hung in the window, and the glass stops being a mirror because the surface behind it is brighter than the street. The same principle works for a simple silhouette: a figure cut from card and a single lamp behind it reads from forty feet, and costs nothing.

Projection is the one that actually works

If one window is going to carry the display, make it a projected one. Motion is what the eye catches at distance, and a figure walking back and forth behind an upstairs window is the single most effective thing you can do to a house that does not involve the lawn at all. It also survives weather completely, because everything except the screen is indoors.

The screen is not optional and it is where people economize wrongly. Projecting straight onto glass gives you a dim, washed-out image with a bright hot-spot where the lens reflects back. A proper rear-projection or holographic screen is what makes the effect read. The best Halloween projector for a window covers the hardware pairing, and how to set up Halloween window projection covers the geometry — throw distance, height and keeping the projector out of its own image.

Upstairs windows are worth more than downstairs ones

An upper-floor window is above the parked cars, above the hedge and above every other prop on the street. It is seen from further away than anything at ground level, and almost nobody uses it. If the house has two storeys, put the best window effect upstairs and something simple downstairs, rather than the other way round.

The practical constraint is power and access: you need an outlet in that room and you need to be able to reach the window without a ladder outside. Both are usually fine, because the whole effect lives indoors.

Clings, suction lights and the daylight half of the season

Clings get criticised for doing nothing after dark, which is true and beside the point. Half of October is daylight, the school run goes past your house twice a day, and a window of bats or a spider web is exactly right for that audience. They leave no residue, they go up in two minutes and they come down in one. Treat them as the daytime layer and do not expect them to carry the night.

Suction-cup window lights are the opposite: invisible by day, genuinely effective after dark because they bring their own light and therefore beat the mirror. A set in two or three windows across a facade gives a house a lit, occupied, deliberate look that costs almost nothing. For an apartment or a rental where nothing can be fixed to the building, this pairing is close to the whole display — the best Halloween decorations for apartments goes further into that case.

Outside the glass, and what that costs you

Props mounted on the outside of a window — a ghost bursting out of a frame, a figure on the sill — read well in daylight and have real presence, but they take on all the problems the indoor options avoid: wind, rain, and something to attach to that will not mark the frame. Use a sill or ledge where there is one, use no-hole hooks on siding rather than screws, and accept that anything on the outside comes down when the forecast turns.

How to hang Halloween decorations without damaging walls covers the fixings for siding, brick and stucco, and how to decorate a house exterior for Halloween covers how the windows fit into the rest of the facade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Halloween window decoration?

A projection kit with a proper rear-projection screen, for any window that faces a street. A moving figure behind glass is the only window effect that reliably reads from the sidewalk, and everything except the screen stays indoors and dry.

Why can you not see window decorations from outside at night?

Because an unlit room turns the glass into a mirror reflecting the street. Anything on the inside of that glass is competing with a reflected streetlight. Put a light source inside the room aimed at the window and the problem disappears.

Do you put Halloween window clings on the inside or outside?

Inside for most houses — they stay clean, they last longer and they are easier to remove. Outside only if you specifically want them readable at close range from the path. Either way they are a daytime decoration and do very little after dark.

Can you project onto a window without a screen?

You can, but it looks poor. Glass gives a dim washed-out image with a reflected hot-spot from the lens. A rear-projection or holographic screen hung in the window is what makes the effect actually read from the street.

Which window should you decorate?

An upstairs one, if the house has two storeys. Upper windows sit above parked cars and hedges and are seen from much further away than anything at ground level, and almost nobody on a typical street uses them.
