Why hang time is the outdoor number
Indoors it barely matters. Outdoors it is the whole thing, because a yard is an open volume with wind moving through it. Fluid that disperses in ninety seconds means you fog, and by the time a group reaches the display the yard is clear.

What is uncontroversial is that the gap between a long-hang-time fluid and a general-purpose one outdoors is large and immediately visible.
One honest caveat: long hang time is not free. Fog that lingers for hours lingers everywhere, including across a driveway or into a neighbor's yard. That is usually fine and occasionally is not.
Chiller fluid is not an upsell
If you have gone to the trouble of chilling your output, chiller-formulated fluid is the thing that makes the chilling pay. It is built to stay dense after cooling and to travel across the ground instead of pooling at the outlet. Running general-purpose fluid through a chiller wastes a lot of the effect you set up.

Matching fluid to the machine
Fog fluid is specified for a wattage range and it is printed on the bottle. Froggy's general-purpose Halloween fluid, for instance, is specified for 400 to 1500 watt water-based machines, which covers most home foggers.
- Stay in the stated range. Fluid run outside its band can carbonize in the heater block and clog the nozzle.
- Never improvise. Homemade mixtures damage pumps and heater blocks and can produce genuinely unpleasant output.
- Run fluid through before storage. A pump left full of drying residue is a pump that needs replacing, and a clogged nozzle is next year's no-fog fault.
- Keep it sealed between seasons. Contamination, not age, is what ruins stored fluid.
How much to buy
More than you think if you run a high-output machine, and less than you think if you run in bursts. Burst operation is the single biggest saving available and it produces a better effect than running continuously, which mostly looks like smoke. If you are buying at the end of the season, fluid is one of the things genuinely worth stocking up on in the November clearance: it does not expire in any practical sense if kept sealed, and you will need it next year regardless.
